Relative Immigration

7

Probably the first emigrant from Parish Scheeßel to settle in Perry County, Missouri was Johann Heinrich Miesner. He lived in the midst of Lutheran settlers from Saxony. and after Miesner’s first wife died, he returned to Scheeßel where he apparently told of the favorable conditions in America. In 1866, Johann sailed on the ship “Carl”, along with 20 people from Lamstedt and 30 people from Scheeßel, back to Missouri. The ship Carl passenger manifest included Maria Meÿer, oldest daughter of my great-great-grandparents, Peter and Anna (Gerken) Meÿer. [1]

The immigrations of my Cordes and Meyer relatives to Perry County, Missouri, USA from Scheeßel are documented in the following chapters. Most of my Scheeßel relatives sailed from Bremerhaven to New Orleans and then traveled by riverboat up the Mississippi River to Perry County.  However, the Kraus and Margret (Cordes) Korte family sailed from Bremerhaven to New York and then made their way to Perry County.
